Challenging the Limits of Modular Case - Mod NX August 08 2018
Last September we released our first modular case - the Mod. It was not only a brand new experience for our users but also a brand new attempt for us. Thanks to your support, we received effective feedback which gave us insights and inspiration. As part of our ethos of continuous improvement, we started to work on an updated version of modular case design. After almost a year of hard work, we’ve successfully created the next generation of Mod - Mod NX!
Compared to the first generation Mod cases, we’ve made some small but significant updates to Mod NX:
The locking mechanism of Mod NX is different from that of the first generation Mod. We readjusted the ridges / grooves which connect the frame to the rim / backplate. The updated mechanism provides a greater tolerance for the margin of error (of the device it is protecting). As the physical design of the NX series differs from the first generation Mod cases, older Mod accessories are not compatible with NX components and vice-versa (except for removable buttons).
Although it’s a subtle structural adjustment, it reduces:
1. The gap at the charging port
2. The gap between the frame and rim on the sides
Improved Scratch Resistance
When we were developing the first generation Mod cases, we worked hard to avoid harmful chemicals and make it BPA free. It was a challenge for us as most hard plastics (which can be found in the majority of case brands) contain BPA. We succeeded in formulating one of the safest impact-resistant materials, the new ShockSpread™ material which is 100% BPA free (refer to this blog post for more details). While it is a safer choice for you, the Mod backplate does pick up cosmetic scratches more easily.
For the Mod NX, we worked out a way to improve its scratch resistance while making it BPA free at the same time. We applied the technique to both the inner and outer layers of the backplate. There is still a long way to make it completely scratch resistant, and we will keep working on this.
Better Compatibility (Front and Back Protectors)
The first generation Mod cases are not compatible with our Impact Protection Back Protector in standard case mode, and we wanted to improve on this. Therefore, we readjusted the locking mechanism of Mod NX in a way that allows for greater flexibility between the device and the backplate. Mod NX is now compatible with ALL types of RhinoShield protectors, including the Impact Protection Back Protector, to provide a more comprehensive protection. You don’t have to worry about the glass back when switching to the bumper case mode.
Installing and removing your NX case is now more natural than its predecessor. Just assemble the case then insert the phone to install. To remove, push out the phone first like any normal case.
More Color Combinations
With the Mod (first generation), you can create a personalized and unique case by mixing and matching frame / rim / button colors. With the Mod NX, you can create even more color combinations! To get the most out of this customizable feature, we’ve added more frame, rim and button colors for the NX series. New frame colors include red, yellow, graphite and royal blue. New rim / button colors include red, yellow, graphite, fern green, orange, purple and more.
Mod products (first generation) for iPhone 7 (Plus), 8 (Plus) and X will no longer be available for sale. As Mod NX will not support iPhone 5 / 5s / SE and 6 / 6s (Plus), Mod (first generation) for these models will still be available on our site.
Supported Devices: iPhone 7 (Plus), 8 (Plus), X and the upcoming new 2018 iPhones.
